QiYi 2x2 Mastermorphix is a 2x2 cube shaped like a tetrahedron with rounded edges that loses its shape as you scramble it. You solve it with a 2x2 method, but the uneven pieces make it harder to recognize positions. It's a good first shape-shifting puzzle for anyone who already knows the basics.
QiYi 2x2 Mastermorphix is a regular 2x2 cube reworked into a new shape. When solved, it looks like a regular tetrahedron with rounded edges, in other words a small pyramid. It's a so-called shape mod: the mechanism stays the same as in a 2x2, and only the shape of the pieces changes. After a few moves, the pyramid turns into a solid with irregular faces. That's exactly why this puzzle looks much harder than it really is.
You solve the Mastermorphix 2x2 with a 2x2 method, so you don't need to learn any new algorithms. The difficulty lies elsewhere. The pieces have different shapes and sizes, and the puzzle loses its form as you scramble it, so it's harder to tell which corner is where and where to perform an algorithm you know. At first it's easy to get lost, even if you can solve a 2x2 without thinking. A 2x2 cube has only corners and no centers, so you don't have to worry about center orientation like on the Mastermorphix 3x3.
The mechanism turns smoothly without much resistance, so it's pleasant to solve. Corner cutting doesn't matter much here, because nobody solves this puzzle for time. Even so, the mechanism handles everyday solving well. The Stickerless Bright version has no stickers, just pieces made of colored plastic, so nothing peels off or wears away. The rounded edges sit comfortably in your hand.
The Mastermorphix 2x2 is a good first step into shape-shifting puzzles for anyone who can already solve a 2x2 or 3x3 and wants something different from yet another cube. It also works well as a gift for a child who already knows the basics of solving, and as an affordable addition to your collection. It's also a good introduction to the larger Mastermorphix 3x3. Keep in mind that this puzzle is meant for fun and for developing spatial thinking. It is not allowed in official competitions.
