QiYi 3x3 Axis S Cube is a refreshed version of the Axis Cube, one of the best-known 3x3-based shape mods. The mechanism is the same as in a classic cube, but the cuts run at an angle to the faces. After a few moves, the Axis loses its cube shape and turns into an irregular solid. The S version has a black body and colored plastic tiles instead of stickers, plus an improved internal mechanism.

How to solve the Axis Cube

The moves and algorithms are the same as on a regular 3x3 cube, so knowing the layer-by-layer method is enough to get started. The challenge lies elsewhere: the pieces differ in size and shape, and you solve the cube by color and by shape at the same time. This makes it harder to recognize which piece is where and how it is oriented. Many people consider the Axis one of the harder 3x3 shape mods. Your first solves will usually take quite a while, until your eyes get used to the unusual shape.

What the S version changes

• Tiles instead of stickers. The colored tiles don't peel off or wear at the edges as quickly as vinyl stickers, so the cube looks new for longer.
• Improved mechanism. QiYi has redesigned the internals so the cube turns more smoothly than the first version of the Axis. Reviewers say the cube turns well right out of the box.

The cube has no magnets and no tension adjustment. It's a puzzle for solving for fun, not a cube for timed speedcubing, so don't expect it to behave like a magnetic 3x3. If you want to change the feel, you can apply a slower lube, but it isn't necessary.

The Axis S is a great choice for someone who can already solve a classic 3x3 and wants to try something different without learning new algorithms. It works well as a first shape mod in a collection, while still being challenging, because you have to learn to recognize the shapes. As a gift for a child, it makes sense if the child can already solve a regular cube. For learning from scratch, a standard 3x3 is a better choice.
