QiYi 3x3x3 Fisher Cube

When solved, it looks almost like a regular cube, but after a few moves the difference quickly becomes clear. The QiYi 3x3x3 Fisher Cube is a shape-shifting puzzle (shape mod) built on the mechanism of a classic 3x3 cube. Its cuts are rotated by 45 degrees around one axis. Once scrambled, the cube loses its cubic shape, and the layers form irregular shapes made of wedges and triangles. The name comes from Tony Fisher, the puzzle designer who came up with this modification.

How to solve the Fisher Cube

The mechanism is the same as in a 3x3, so the same notation and the same algorithms apply. What changes is the role of the individual pieces. On the side faces, the middle-layer pieces that look like edges are actually centers. In the top and bottom layers, edges and corners swap roles. The centers cause the most confusion. On a regular cube you can't see how they are oriented, but here you can. So near the end of the solve, you may find that one of the centers still needs to be rotated with an extra algorithm.

All you need is to be able to solve a 3x3, even with the beginner's method. Then you'll master the Fisher after getting used to it for a short while, because mainly you have to learn to recognize the pieces all over again.

Mechanism and adjustment

Turning is smooth with no catching, so the cube is well suited to relaxed, casual solving. You can change the tension with the adjustment screws. Just keep in mind that this is a puzzle for fun, not a speedcubing cube. The Fisher Cube is not allowed in official competitions.

Color versions

The cube is available in Black, Stickerless Bright, Jelly color and Bright/Black versions. The mechanism is the same in all of them; they differ only in appearance.

Who is it for?

For those who can already solve a 3x3 and want to try their first shape mod without learning a completely new method. It's also a great gift for a child or teenager who has already conquered the classic cube. If you're just starting out, it's better to learn to solve a regular 3x3 first.
