QiYi Ancient Coin Cube is a shape mod puzzle. From the outside it looks like a cube, but it works differently from a classic 3x3 cube. Each face has a round disc that resembles an old coin, which is where the name comes from. The puzzle has two types of moves: corner turns and turns of the discs on the faces, which rotate a full 360 degrees. We offer the stickerless version in bright colors (Stickerless Bright).
The two types of moves are linked. Some corner turns are only possible when the discs on the adjacent faces are positioned correctly. So before you turn a corner, you have to think about the position of the discs, not just the colors. According to users, once you understand the principle, solving the Ancient Coin Cube is relatively easy and doesn't require learning algorithms. It feels more like a logic puzzle than typical speedcubing.
Buyers describe the turning as smooth and quiet. Sometimes, however, the puzzle won't turn even though the pieces look properly aligned. This is slight catching that is typical of many unusual mechanisms, not a defect of a particular unit. The puzzle has no magnets, so it doesn't settle into place on its own like magnetic speed cubes do. Turning it calls for a bit more precision rather than speed.
It's a good choice if you can already solve a classic 3x3 cube and want to try something different from yet another cube in a similar style. It also works well as one of your first shape mods, because the way it works is intuitive. Thanks to its unusual look, the cube stands out in a collection. Some people arrange the discs into decorative patterns instead of returning straight to the solved state. For a first cube to learn solving on, especially for a child, a classic 3x3 is a better choice.
