QiYi DuoMo Cube

QiYi DuoMo Cube is a shape mod from the Pyraminx family, though it is closer to the Pyraminx Duo than to the classic Pyraminx. The easiest way to describe it is as an extended version of the Duo, sometimes also called the "Master Pyraminx Duo". It has no tips, but there are more pieces to solve. Its shape sets it apart from a regular tetrahedron, so it looks great in a collection. It is not a WCA event, so you buy the DuoMo for fun and for your collection, not for competitions.

How to solve the DuoMo

This puzzle is simple, both to solve and in its construction. If you know the Pyraminx, you will quickly find your way around it. You start by solving the edges much like on a Pyraminx, and at the end you may find that the centers need to be swapped. You do this with a few sledgehammers. What takes the most getting used to is recognizing the pieces, as the unusual shape can be a little confusing at first. According to users, the DuoMo is noticeably harder than a regular Pyraminx Duo, but solving it still doesn't take long. That makes it a great puzzle to pick up for a few solves and put down again.

Mechanism and turning

The mechanism has steel positioning balls. Thanks to them, the layers give a noticeable "click" when they snap into place, and the puzzle is more stable. Turning is smooth, but slightly tactile because of the balls. Occasionally you may feel slight catches, but they don't get in the way of solving. Catching happens mainly during fast speedsolving, for example during quick sledgehammers. Users don't report any popping. Just slow down for a moment and you can keep turning. The mechanism has no magnets.

Who is it for?

For those who already have a Pyraminx or Pyraminx Duo and are looking for another puzzle from this family, without a big jump in difficulty. It also makes a good gift for a child who is starting to get interested in puzzles, and an interesting piece for a collection. If you want to practice the WCA Pyraminx for time, choose the classic Pyraminx.
