QiYi Gear Cylinder

QiYi Gear Cylinder combines two well-known 3x3 cube modifications: the Gear mechanism and the Barrel shape, i.e. a cylinder. Inside, it works like QiYi's classic Gear Cube, while on the outside the puzzle takes the form of a cylinder. It was released in 2020. This is a puzzle for fun and a change from the regular 3x3. It is not allowed in official WCA competitions.

How the Gear mechanism works

In a Gear Cube, the edge pieces have teeth that mesh with each other like the wheels in a gearbox. When you turn one outer face, the middle layer and the opposite face turn along with it, and the edges rotate around their own axis. A single move therefore changes the position of more pieces than on a regular cube. It can be a bit confusing at first, but once you understand the principle, the Gear turns out to be a fairly approachable puzzle. Solving instructions are included, so you don't need to look for tutorials to get started.

What the cylinder shape changes

The mechanism is the same as in the Gear Cube; only the shape is different. The rounded sides give you fewer hints about how you are holding the puzzle and which layer needs aligning, so it is harder to keep your bearings than with a cube. If you already know the regular Gear, this is a good next step in the same puzzle family.

Turning

QiYi's gear puzzles are well regarded among cubers. Users praise the Cylinder for its smooth and stable turning straight out of the box. The puzzle feels pleasant in the hand and looks different from typical puzzles on the shelf, which is why shape mod collectors are keen to buy it.

Who is it for?

For cubers who can already solve a 3x3 and want to try something different, as well as for collectors of Gear series puzzles and shape mods. It also makes a great gift for anyone who enjoys puzzles. It is not a cube for speed training.
