QiYi Hexagonal Klotski

QiYi Hexagonal Klotski is a klotski-style sliding puzzle built on a hexagon. The idea is the same as in the classic "15 puzzle": you slide the numbered pieces until they are in order from the smallest to the largest. The difference is that all the pieces are triangles, and the numbering goes up to 22. Because of this, the puzzle works a bit differently from square klotski, and you have to look for new ways to solve it.

How it differs from square klotski

On a square board, a piece moves in four directions. Here the triangles slide along the three axes of the hexagon, and some of them point up while others point down. According to users, this creates an interesting possibility: you can swap two pieces with the same orientation and still solve the whole puzzle. In square sliding puzzles this is not always possible. Methods from classic klotski only help partly, so even if you know square puzzles well, you will need to work out new approaches.

How it slides

This is not a sliding puzzle for speedsolving in the same way as QiYi's square klotski. The pieces have no guide rails, and a triangle can rotate slightly while it moves. If you slide it at an angle, it may get stuck. At a fast pace, you will sometimes need to straighten the pieces by hand. It works best for calm solving that focuses on thinking rather than speed. Reviewers also point out that the puzzle is large. It is closer to the size of a small plate than a pocket sliding puzzle.

Who is it for?

For anyone who already knows classic klotski and wants to try a different geometry. Hexagonal Klotski also makes a good logic puzzle for an older child or an adult who enjoys spatial puzzles. If your main goal is to beat time records, the square QiYi klotski is a better choice.
