QiYi Klotski 3x3 Puzzle

Eight numbered tiles, one empty space and a 3x3 board. The QiYi Klotski 3x3 Puzzle is a magnetic number sliding puzzle, a smaller version of the well-known "15 puzzle". It fits in your hand and needs no preparation before you use it for the first time. Just scramble the tiles and put them back in order.

How to solve it

Your goal is to arrange the tiles in order from 1 to 8 by sliding them into the empty space. You can't take them out or jump one over another, so every move changes where the empty space is. That's why you need to think a few moves ahead. For beginners, the easiest approach is the layer-by-layer method:

• first, place the top row: 1-2-3,
• then the left column, i.e. 4 and 7,
• finally, cycle the remaining three tiles around the 2x2 square until they reach their spots.

Once you've mastered that, you can work on reducing your move count and solve against the clock. People who practise speed-solving sliding puzzles treat the 3x3 as a warm-up and a good introduction before moving on to bigger boards.

Magnetic tiles

The tiles are held to the base by magnets, which also align them in their positions. They don't fall out when you carry the puzzle, and it won't come apart in your backpack or in the car. Classic, non-magnetic sliding puzzles aren't always as reliable in this respect.

Who is it for?

Above all, for kids and anyone just starting out with logic puzzles. On a 3x3 board the principle is easy to understand, and the first solve comes relatively quickly. The puzzle also works well as a pocket-sized break for adults. More experienced solvers may soon find the 3x3 version too easy. The QiYi Klotski series also includes larger boards, e.g. 4x4 and 5x5, which offer far more combinations.
