QiYi Magnetic 8x8x8 Ball-Core

8x8 cubes are usually big and heavy, so after a few solves your hands get tired. The QiYi Magnetic 8x8x8 Ball-Core measures only approx. 64 mm per side, which makes it smaller than many 7x7 cubes. This magnetic 8x8 cube combines piece magnets with Ball-Core, meaning magnets between the corners and the center of the cube. The model went on sale in the second half of 2025 and is available in a stickerless bright version.

Size and grip

On an 8x8, size affects comfort more than on small cubes. A smaller cube sits more easily in your hands, and regrips are shorter. At approx. 188 g, the QiYi 8x8 weighs less than a typical big cube and works better in longer sessions. Users compare its size to a larger 5x5 rather than a classic 8x8.

Design and technology

  • Piece magnets are factory-installed. They help layers settle into place and reduce lockups, which quickly add up on a cube with this many layers.
  • Ball-Core uses magnets connecting the corners to the core. According to the manufacturer and distributors, they give more controllable turning and better alignment.
  • The dual-center design is meant to stiffen the center pieces, which are the most common source of instability in big cubes.
  • Hexagonal pieces (hex piece design) help spread the lube evenly inside the mechanism.
  • Snap-on center caps don't pop out while you solve.

Feel

The magnets are fairly strong, and the cube is geared towards stability and control rather than light, loose turning. For most people, that's an advantage on an 8x8. However, if you're used to weakly magnetized or non-magnetic big cubes, the turning may feel heavier at first. Opinions on magnet strength are divided, so it comes down to personal preference.

Who is it for?

For cubers who already solve 6x6 or 7x7 and want an 8x8 they can solve regularly, not just on special occasions. The small size will also suit people with smaller hands. If this is your first big cube, it's better to start with a 4x4 or 5x5, because solving an 8x8 takes a long time and requires knowing the reduction method.
