QiYi Magnetic Set

QiYi Magnetic Set: MS 2x2-5x5 cube set

One package contains four cubes from QiYi's budget MS series: 2x2, 3x3, 4x4 and 5x5. The QiYi Magnetic Set lets you cover the basic NxN events in one go, without picking each cube separately. All cubes in the set are factory magnetic. Each one comes in its own box, which is handy later for storing the cube safely or carrying it in your backpack.

The MS series in brief

QiYi launched the MS series in 2020 as an affordable line of magnetic cubes. The magnets are medium strength. They help pull the layers into place and reduce overshooting, but they don't make turning feel heavy. These are simple cubes without flagship features such as MagLev or Ball-Core. Still, they are ready for normal solving straight out of the box, and you can change the tension with the screws in the core.

How each cube turns

• QiYi MS 2x2: light and fast, with good corner cutting right from the start. Some people find it less controllable than heavier 2x2s.
• QiYi MS 3x3: the feel is crisp and fairly "clicky", and the turns are precise. For its price, it has also caught the attention of competitive cubers. If you like very smooth cubes, you may prefer a different character.
• QiYi MS 4x4: fast, with a slightly crunchy feel. It measures 62 mm, so it is larger than many newer 4x4s.
• QiYi MS 5x5: smooth and soft to turn, with layers rotating evenly. Out of the box it can be dry and set quite tight. Slightly loosening the screws and adding some lube usually helps a lot.

Black or Stickerless Bright?

The Black version has black plastic with stickers. Stickerless Bright is coloured plastic without stickers, so nothing peels off or wears away. The mechanism is the same in both versions.

Who is it for?

This magnetic cube set is a great fit for someone who can already solve a 3x3 and wants to try bigger cubes. It also makes a good gift for a child who has got hooked on cubing. Experienced speedcubers will find it useful as a backup or travel set. If you train 4x4 and 5x5 seriously, sooner or later you will probably reach for flagship models with more adjustment options.
