QiYi MS Magnetic Pyraminx

QiYi MS Magnetic Pyraminx

QiYi MS Magnetic Pyraminx belongs to the budget MS series, which QiYi launched in 2020. It's a low-priced magnetic pyraminx that performs well in speedsolving. The puzzle turns smoothly right out of the box. A small flick is all it takes, and the magnets pull the layer into place on their own.

How it turns

The magnets are placed in both the edges and the tips, so the layers and tips settle into place smoothly with a noticeable, gentle "click". In reviews, the MS magnets are considered fairly strong. This makes the puzzle stable and less prone to overturning and lockups. During slow turns, the pull can be clearly felt. Most solvers like this, but if you're used to subtler magnets, you'll notice the difference. As in most pyraminxes, the tips have weaker magnets than the layers. Corner cutting is decent, though nothing special.

The edges of the pieces are gently rounded and fit together well, so longer practice sessions won't tire your fingers. The slightly matte, textured plastic helps you keep a secure grip, which matters with a pyraminx, as its sharper shape slips out of your hands more easily.

Adjustment

Tension is set with screws. Without much setup, you can tune it more for speed or for stability, and tightening the screws also reduces the risk of popping.

Who is it for?

The MS is a great choice as a first magnetic pyraminx for beginners. It doesn't cost much, and unlike cheap non-magnetic models, you won't have to fight with it. For many casual and intermediate solvers, it can stay their main for a long time. The model is legal for official competitions. Advanced cubers who need extra features such as MagLev or core magnets should look at QiYi's higher-end series, e.g. the M Pro.
