QiYi OS Cube 2x2

At first glance, the QiYi OS Cube looks like an ordinary 2x2 cube, just bigger. The difference shows up with the first turn. The faces of the pieces have built-in tiles that slide out or retract as you turn the layers. This is a magnetic shape mod puzzle. Instead of colors, you solve the shape: the cube is solved when all the tiles are retracted and every face is completely flat.

How solving works

The cube is a single color, so colored faces won't help you here. You can only track your progress by which tiles stick out and which are retracted. If you know a method for a regular 2x2, you have a starting point, but you still need to switch to reading the shape instead of colors. That's what sets this puzzle apart from a regular cube. A solving guide is included, so you can get started without looking for tutorials.

Size and turning

The OS Cube measures approx. 67 mm, so it's noticeably bigger than a typical 2x2 speed cube. In the hand, it feels more like a larger NxN cube. It weighs 184 g, which is quite a lot for a 2x2. The magnets help the layers settle into place, so turns feel secure and predictable. Users rate the turning highly, as well as how clearly you can feel the sliding tiles. However, this is not a cube for breaking records. Its size and weight don't favor high TPS, and the model is not allowed in official competitions.

Who is it for?

For cubers who can already solve a 2x2 or 3x3 and are looking for something different from yet another speed cube. It also works well as an addition to a collection of shape mod puzzles. It's a great gift for a child who enjoys puzzles, too. The large size makes the cube easy to hold, and the goal (flat faces) is easy to understand without knowing any jargon. For a first cube to learn speedcubing, a classic magnetic 2x2 is a better choice.
