QiYi QiHeng Megaminx

QiYi QiHeng Megaminx is part of QiYi's budget megaminx series. This is the stickered version with flat faces and no sculpting, so it is a classic dodecahedron with no concave or convex elements, available on a black or white base. The puzzle has no magnets. Its mechanism is the same as the QiHeng S, which is the stickerless version with sculpted faces.

How it turns

The internals are simple, with no elaborate features. In a cheaper megaminx this is actually an advantage, because the puzzle turns without major problems straight out of the box. Users often mention quiet turning and decent corner cutting. The most common complaints are lockups and a rather "heavy", slower feel, especially compared with more expensive magnetic models. Lubing and setting the tension usually help a little, but the QiHeng will not behave like a magnetic flagship.

You set the tension with adjustment screws. A looser setting makes the puzzle turn more lightly, while a tighter one makes it more stable and less likely to pop.

QiHeng, QiHeng S or a magnetic version?

The standard QiHeng and the QiHeng S differ mainly in appearance. Here you get stickers and flat faces, while the S version has coloured plastic and sculpting that improves grip. If you plan to practise megaminx speedsolving regularly, consider a model with magnets. Magnets help the layers settle into place and reduce lockups, which matters a lot on a puzzle with twelve faces.
