QiYi QiMing A Pyraminx

QiYi QiMing A Pyraminx: a budget pyraminx to get started

The QiMing A is a simpler, cheaper version of the QiYi QiMing pyraminx. The main difference is in the tips, the small corner pieces at the very ends. In the standard QiMing, their position is set by a metal ball. The A version has no metal ball. Instead, a small plastic bump does the same job. With heavy use, this bump can wear smooth over time, and then the tips don't hold their position as well.

Mechanism and tension adjustment

Inside, you'll find a simple, proven design similar to earlier QiYi pyraminxes. Tension is adjusted with screws. Users report that out of the box the puzzle can feel stiff and slightly sandy. The screws are tightened firmly, so you'll need a good screwdriver to adjust them. Once loosened and lubed, the QiMing A turns noticeably smoother. For its price, it moves well and is fairly stable, although it doesn't offer the smoothness or control of more expensive models.

What to expect

This pyraminx works well for learning your first method and for your first timed solves. Some users mention that it's fairly loud and has a slippery surface. If you plan to compete and want to bring your times down, you'll run into this model's limits sooner. In that case, it's better to go straight for the full QiMing or a newer magnetic pyraminx. This model is legal for official competitions.

Who is it for?

Mainly for beginners. It's a good first pyraminx for a child or for someone who solves 3x3 cubes and wants to try a new puzzle without spending much.
