QiYi QiMing S2 Pyraminx

QiYi QiMing S2 Pyraminx is a budget, non-magnetic Pyraminx from the QiMing series. It is similar to the earlier QiMing and QiMing A models, and the most important change is inside. The internal parts of the centers have extra grooves that reduce the contact area between pieces. The surface has a frosted finish, and the puzzle is available in Stickerless Bright, Jelly (made of translucent plastic) and Bright/Black versions.

How it turns

The smaller contact area reduces friction, and the lube spreads more evenly across the pieces. Reviewers and buyers describe the turning as smooth and fairly light. Some find the puzzle a little loose, which is no surprise for a model at this price. The QiMing series has a very similar feel across all versions, so switching from the QiMing or QiMing A to the S2 takes no getting used to.

Positioning without a ball

Just like the QiMing A, the tips do not position on a metal ball. Instead, there are three plastic bumps that click into recesses. When a piece snaps into place, you feel a distinct click, so it is easy to tell whether a move has been completed. Keep in mind, however, that with heavy use the bumps may wear smooth and the click may become weaker. The puzzle has no magnets, so at high TPS it is not as stable as mid-range and high-end magnetic Pyraminxes.

Who is it for?

The QiMing S2 works well as a first Pyraminx, especially for a child or anyone who wants to try this puzzle without spending a lot. It also makes a good spare or another piece for your collection, for example in the Jelly version. Pyraminx is a WCA event, so you can also use this puzzle at official competitions. If you regularly practice Pyraminx for time and want stability during fast solves, consider a magnetic model.
