QiYi Sail 7x7 is a budget, non-magnetic 7x7 cube with black plastic and stickers, giving it the classic look of a puzzle cube. It sits at the very bottom of the price range. It works well as your first big cube or as an extra 7x7 for your collection and for making patterns. It is not a cube for breaking records.

How it turns

Buyers say the Sail turns smoothly right out of the box. It comes heavily lubed from the factory, so at first some lube may seep out. Just wipe it off. Don't expect it to feel like a magnetic 7x7, though. Without magnets the layers don't snap into place, so faster turning leads to catching and lockups. Corner cutting is moderate. With calm, accurate turning the cube feels predictable and stable.

At 63 mm it is fairly compact for a 7x7. A smaller cube fits more easily in your hands, especially a child's. It weighs 138 g, which is light for its size.

Sail or a magnetic version?

The Sail 7x7 is a simple, non-magnetic version in black. In the same family QiYi also offers the colourful stickerless Warrior 7x7 and the Warrior 7x7 M UV with magnets and a UV coating. If you really want to practise 7x7 for speed, go straight for the magnetic version. Magnets noticeably reduce lockups, which helps a lot on a cube this big. The Sail makes sense if a low price matters, if you like the traditional stickered look, or if you simply want to find out whether big cubes are for you.

Who is it for?

For someone just starting with big cubes who can already solve a 4x4 or 5x5. For parents looking for an affordable 7x7 for their child. Also for anyone who wants a cheap 7x7 for home, for patterns or as a gift. A speedcuber looking for a competition cube will be happier with a magnetic model.
