QiYi Smart Klotski (Classic)

Klotski is an old, classic sliding puzzle. Blocks of different sizes sit on a board, and your task is to slide them around so that the red block can get out through the exit at the bottom. QiYi Smart Klotski (Classic) is an electronic version of this brain teaser. Instead of a booklet of challenges, it has a built-in display that shows the starting layout of the next level. Its memory holds over 1200 challenges across 6 difficulty levels.

How to play

A block layout appears on the screen. You set up the blocks on the board the same way, then look for the moves that will bring the red block to the exit. You can't lift the blocks off or jump over them, so a single misplaced piece can block half the board and force you to backtrack. The lower levels can be solved quickly. On the higher ones, you need to plan several moves ahead. Besides the standard mode, there is a timed mode in which you can race against the clock or against other family members.

How is it different from a regular Klotski?

A regular plastic or wooden puzzle has one starting layout, or a few from the included instructions. Here, the challenges are stored in the device, so you don't have to look for new layouts or carry a booklet around. You choose the next levels on the display. QiYi has also released other editions in the Smart Klotski series, e.g. the Racing Edition, in which you slide cars instead of blocks to clear the way for a race car. The rules are similar, while the theme and the challenges differ. The Classic version is the traditional Klotski with blocks.

Who is it for?

This is a logic puzzle, not a speedcube, so TPS or tension adjustment don't come into play here. It's a great fit for kids who enjoy puzzles (sellers list the age as 6+). The hardest levels, however, will challenge adults too. It works well as a break from cubes or as a gift for someone who doesn't solve the 3x3 cube but enjoys puzzles that make you think.
