QiYi Super Ivy Cube

QiYi Super Ivy Cube is an extended version of the Ivy Cube from QiYi's MoFangGe puzzle line, with a leaf pattern on its faces. It is shaped like a cube, but it is not just another size of NxN cube. A regular Ivy Cube turns around only four corners, while the Super Ivy turns around all eight. This makes it much harder to solve, and in terms of mechanism it corresponds to the classic Rex Cube. What sets it apart from the Rex Cube is the depth of the cuts: they are deeper here, so the centers are larger. The number of pieces and the solving method are the same.

How it solves

The puzzle turns around its corners, much like a Skewb. Only parts of a sphere inscribed in the cube rotate, not whole halves. Most of the solve is about moving the petals around, so a basic knowledge of commutators and setup moves comes in handy. People who already know the Ivy Cube often reduce the Super Ivy to a regular Ivy first and only then finish the solve. Solving instructions are included.

Users praise the smooth turning and the distinct click, which makes it easier to align the layers in the right position. They also say the puzzle is solidly made and feels fairly heavy in the hand. Some note that a new cube turns a bit stiffly and that the corners are rather sharp.

Build quality

The puzzle is stickerless in bright colors and has a matte surface. The colored pieces have black borders, so from a distance it looks like a stickered puzzle. It measures about 57 mm, which is slightly bigger than a typical 3x3 cube. Some 3x3 cube boxes may be too tight for it.

Who is it for?

For those who have already solved a Skewb or an Ivy Cube and want a harder puzzle from the same family. The Super Ivy is also a great addition to a collection of puzzles outside the official WCA events. It may prove too difficult as a child's first puzzle. To start with, it is better to choose a regular Ivy Cube.
