A mirror cube works just like a regular 3x3 cube, but its pieces differ in size instead of colour. QiYi Tiled Mirror Cube Magnetic is a version of this puzzle with magnets and coloured tiles instead of classic stickers. Once scrambled, the cube quickly loses its cube shape and turns into a block with uneven sides. It is solved only when all the pieces form an even cube again.

How to solve a mirror cube

The mechanism and moves are the same as on a 3x3, so if you know a method for the regular cube, you can use it here too. The challenge lies in recognising the pieces. You have to look at the thickness and height of the blocks, not at the colours. At first it is easy to confuse an edge with a corner or to place a piece incorrectly, which is why the mirror cube is great for training shape recognition. The pieces differ in height, so you can recognise them by touch. That is why mirror cubes are often solved blindfolded.

Magnets and tiles instead of stickers

The magnets noticeably improve stability. The layers snap into place on their own, which matters more on a mirror cube than on a regular cube, because the uneven pieces make it harder to feel whether a layer is properly aligned. The cube turns like a speed cube, so it solves more smoothly than cheap old-style mirror cubes.

The coloured tiles are embedded in the pieces and will not peel off or wear down over time like stickers. For a cube you turn often and carry around with you, that is a clear advantage.
