QiYi Warrior Pyraminx M

QiYi Warrior Pyraminx M is an affordable magnetic Pyraminx from the Warrior series, QiYi's line of budget puzzles with magnets. The letter M in the name stands for the magnetic version. It has 44 magnets, a matte (frosted) surface and a stickerless bright colour scheme. It's a great choice for your first Pyraminx or as a second practice puzzle if you don't want to spend money on a flagship right away.

Magnets and turning feel

The magnets are placed in both the edges and the corners. With every move, the layer clearly "clicks" into place, and the puzzle pulls it into position by itself. This is a big help for beginners: it's harder to leave a layer slightly misaligned, so lockups on the next move happen less often. The corners of the pieces are well rounded, so corner cutting forgives turns that aren't perfectly aligned.

Tension is adjusted the classic way, with screws. There is no separate compression adjustment or the systems known from more expensive models, so the range of settings is smaller. In practice, it's enough to make the Pyraminx looser or tighter. It's best to tighten the screws in small, even steps on each face.

Finish and size

The matte plastic gives a good grip, doesn't pick up fingerprints as easily and doesn't scratch as quickly as a glossy surface. The edge length is 96 mm, the standard Pyraminx size. It weighs approx. 76 g, so the puzzle won't tire your hands during longer sessions. A beginner's guide is included in the box.

The Warrior Pyraminx M is a great fit for someone just starting out with the Pyraminx, for a child who has already solved the 3x3 cube and wants something new, and for a cuber who wants an inexpensive magnetic model for practice. Speedcubers who train Pyraminx seriously and want to fine-tune their setup will probably choose a higher-end model with more adjustment options. As a solid start, however, the Warrior M will serve you for a long time.
