ShengShou 10x10 Mastermorphix

ShengShou 10x10 Mastermorphix (also sold under the SengSo brand) is a 10x10 cube reshaped into a tetrahedron, a so-called shape mod. The mechanism and layer structure are the same as in a regular 10x10, but the pieces come in different shapes. Once scrambled, the puzzle no longer looks like a pyramid, and it's hard to tell where the corners are. ShengShou released this model in early 2022. At that time it was the largest mass-produced Mastermorphix rather than one handmade by modders.

What makes it difficult

If you can solve a 10x10, you already know the method: reduction, which means building the centers and edges and then solving it like a 3x3. The Mastermorphix adds three challenges on top of that:

• shape shifting: the shape of the puzzle changes with every move, so you need to watch both the colors and the shape of the pieces,
• center orientation: the centers have shapes, so it's not enough for them to be on the right face; they also have to be turned the right way,
• piece recognition: some pieces that look like corners aren't actually corners.

As with any cube with an even number of layers, you also have to deal with parity. So this isn't a puzzle for beginners. It's a challenge for cubers who have already tackled big cubes or smaller morphixes.

Mechanism and tension adjustment

The cube has no magnets. Tension is set with screws, and with a puzzle this large it's worth adjusting it right after you take it out of the box. Customer reviews show that factory setups can vary. Some units are stiff at first and only loosen up after a few solves, while others arrive noticeably loose. Corner cutting doesn't matter as much here as it does in speed cubes, because at this size and shape smooth turning and stability come first. This model gets good reviews for exactly that.

Who is it for?

For shape mod collectors and anyone who already owns morphixes from the ShengShou series and wants the largest size. It's also a great pick for big cube fans looking for something harder than yet another NxN cube. It is not legal in official WCA competitions. If you're buying a gift for a beginner, the classic 3x3 Mastermorphix is a better choice.
