SengSo 2x2 War-Drums is a ShengShou puzzle (SengSo is this manufacturer's brand) that looks completely different from a regular cube. It has a tapered, drum-like shape and turns around 8 axes instead of the three of a classic 2x2 cube. It is the smallest model in the War-Drums series. The same design is also available in 3x3, 4x4 and 5x5 versions.

How the War-Drums 2x2 turns

Despite its unusual shape, the puzzle is non-jumbling. The layers only turn in full moves, so you can't make an "in-between" move that would scramble the pieces unpredictably. Sellers describe the turning as smooth, stable and intuitive. There are no magnets inside. The puzzle also has no tension adjustment system like the ones you know from speed cubes. It's a puzzle for your collection and for solving just for fun, not gear for chasing TPS.

The plastic is stickerless in bright colors, with no UV coating. With 8 axes, you'll need some time to adjust at first: the moves look different than on a cube, and it's harder to carry over your 3x3 habits.

For anyone who can already solve a classic cube and is looking for something other than yet another 2x2 or 3x3 model. It will also appeal to collectors of shape mods and unusual puzzles, especially those who want to own several War-Drums sizes. The 2x2 version is a good way to start the series, as it's the simplest. The larger versions are noticeably harder. It isn't a WCA event, so the War-Drums won't help you train for competitions.

For a child's very first puzzle, a regular 2x2 or 3x3 cube is a better choice. The War-Drums is best bought as a second or later step. Also, don't pry or twist the corners on 2x2 puzzles, as you could break a piece.
