SengSo 5x5 War-Drums puzzle

ShengShou War Drums 5x5 (listed in our shop as SengSo 5x5 War-Drums) is a twisty puzzle from the War Drums series. It has a distinctive drum shape with tapered, rounded faces. Unlike a classic 5x5 cube, it turns around 8 axes instead of 6. The "5x5" refers to the number of layers: there are five on each edge. We offer it in the stickerless bright version, made of coloured plastic with no stickers.

How it differs from a regular 5x5 cube

Because of its 8 axes of rotation and differently shaped pieces, this puzzle can't be solved with the method you know from a classic 5x5. You need to learn to recognize the pieces and work out algorithms suited to this geometry. Five layers per axis means lots of pieces and a long solve, so it's more of a puzzle to figure out at your own pace than one for timed speedcubing. Retailers who carry it describe the turning as smooth and stable.

The War Drums series

ShengShou released War Drums in several sizes: 2x2, 3x3, 4x4 and 5x5. The 5x5 is the largest and most difficult in the series. If this is your first 8-axis puzzle, it will be easier to start with a smaller size and move on to the 5x5 later. If you already know similar designs, you can go straight for the largest version.

Who is it for?

For cubers who can already solve NxN cubes and are looking for a new challenge, and for collectors of unusual puzzles. Its bold colours and sculpted shape also make War Drums look great on a shelf. For a child's first cube, a classic 3x3 is a better choice, as this puzzle can quickly be discouraging.
