SengSo 8x8 Kilominx by ShengShou is a dodecahedron with 8 layers on every face. You may also find it under the name Royal Kilominx 8x8. It is an even-layered variant of the Megaminx, so it belongs to the same family as the regular Kilominx (2 layers), Master Kilominx (4) and Elite Kilominx (6). Its faces are flat rather than bulged, just like other larger ShengShou minxes. The version we offer is Stickerless Bright, with coloured pieces and no stickers.

How it differs from the Megaminx

The Megaminx, Gigaminx and Teraminx have an odd number of layers, so each face has a fixed center that defines its colour from the start. Kilominxes have no such center. The center of each face on the 8x8 is made up of many movable pieces, and you have to build it yourself first, while the corners determine the colour scheme. The 8x8 Kilominx is usually solved by reduction: first the centers, then edge pairing, and finally the whole puzzle like a regular Megaminx. With this many pieces, a single solve is a long session rather than a timed solve.

Size and handling

It measures approx. 156 mm and weighs approx. 1060 g, so it is noticeably larger and heavier than typical minxes. It is hard to turn in the air. It is most comfortable to solve with both hands while resting it on a table. Reviews are consistent: it turns well for its size, and the stickerless version is clearly cheaper than the first, stickered edition. Don't expect the smoothness of a small speed cube, though. With a puzzle this big, what matters most is stability and whether you can comfortably solve it all the way through.

Who is it for?

For people who have already solved the Megaminx, ideally also the Master or Elite Kilominx, and want a bigger challenge from the same family. It also fits well into a collection of ShengShou minxes, as it fills the gap between the Elite Kilominx and the Petaminx. It is a poor choice for your first dodecahedron. To start with, a regular Megaminx or Kilominx is a better option.
