ShengShou 8x8 Mastermorphix Cube

ShengShou 8x8 Mastermorphix (labelled SengSo on the box) is an 8x8 cube rebuilt into the shape of a tetrahedron with rounded faces. Inside, it uses a standard 8x8 mechanism, but on the outside the puzzle has only four faces, and the pieces differ in shape and size. As a result, the shape deforms noticeably once scrambled. It is one of the largest mass-produced morphix-type puzzles. This version is stickerless with a bright colour scheme.

What makes it difficult

To solve it, you only need to know the reduction method for big cubes: centers first, then edge pairing, and finally a 3x3 stage. As with any even-layered cube, there are no fixed centers, so you have to be ready for parity. The main challenge, however, is the shape. Pieces from different positions have different proportions, so you need to watch the orientation of the centers, and in a scrambled puzzle it is hard to tell right away which pieces are the corners. That is why the Mastermorphix 8x8 is best saved for later. It makes sense for someone who has already mastered the 6x6 or 7x7 and is looking for a new challenge. For your first shape-shifting puzzle, a Mastermorphix 3x3 or 4x4 is a better choice.

How it turns

According to user reviews, it turns smoothly right out of the box and the puzzle holds together well. This puzzle is not about TPS, so corner cutting matters less here than in speedcubing cubes. What matters more is that the layers move predictably and don't resist during long sessions. The cube has no magnets. Tension is set with adjustment screws, so you can tune it to your liking, e.g. after breaking in the mechanism and applying lube.

At about 318 g and over 10 cm in size, it is a fairly large and heavy puzzle. It is more comfortable to solve on a table or a mat than in your hands alone.
