SengSo Axis Mirror SQ-1 is a Square-1 from ShengShou in a mirror version. All pieces share the same silver color, so colors give you no hints: you solve the puzzle by the shape and size of the pieces alone. This is not just a regular single-color Square-1. The mechanism is off-axis, which means the top and bottom layers turn around their own offset axes, and they also have different heights.

How it differs from a regular Square-1

Because of the offset axes and different layer heights, almost every piece in the top and bottom layers has a different shape. The middle layer is still symmetrical relative to the slice, so the / move works just like on a classic SQ-1. After a scramble, the puzzle changes shape much more than a regular one, and once solved it returns to a cube shape.

The biggest challenge is recognition. The algorithms are the same as for Square-1, but without colors it is harder to read the case and spot parity in advance. It is a great workout for your spatial imagination, but it may not click for everyone right away.

Mechanism and magnets

According to the distributor's description, this is the magnetic version (ShengShou Mr.M), so magnets help the layers settle into the right positions. It is not a speedcubing flagship built for high TPS. This puzzle is meant more for relaxed solving and collecting than for breaking records. If the puzzle is noisy or has too much lube out of the box, cleaning it and re-lubing it usually does the trick.

Who is it for?

For those who can already solve a Square-1 and want to try it in a harder, shape-shifting version. It will also appeal to collectors of mirror puzzles. If you are learning Square-1 from scratch, it is better to start with a classic, colored model. If you prefer a simpler version in the same style, check out the Axis Mirror SQ-0, which has no edges.
