ShengShou Crazy 2x2 Cube

From the outside it looks like an ordinary two-layer cube, but it has more pieces. ShengShou Crazy 2x2 (also labelled by the manufacturer as SengSo Crazy 2x2x2) is a modification of the classic 2x2 cube from the Crazy series. There is a circle in the middle of each face, and its pieces get scrambled too. This gives the familiar 2x2 an extra layer of difficulty. The cube comes in the stickerless bright version with a matte (frosted) finish.

How the Crazy 2x2 works

Not all circles behave the same way. According to distributors' descriptions, three of them (on the white, blue and orange faces) do not turn together with their face, while the other three turn normally. So it is not enough to solve the corners as on a regular 2x2. You also have to keep track of where the circle pieces go and put them in the right places. It is not a very hard puzzle, but even if you can solve a 2x2 from memory, you will need to think a bit here.

How it turns

For a cube in this category it turns fairly smoothly, although it is still a puzzle, not a speed cube. The cube has no magnets, and lockups can happen with faster turning, so it is better to turn calmly and precisely. Do not pry or force-twist the corners of 2x2 cubes, as you could break a piece.

Who is it for?

For anyone who can already solve a 2x2 cube and wants to try something different than yet another faster model. It is also a great pick for collectors of the ShengShou Crazy series and fans of unusual non-WCA puzzles. For a child's first cube, a regular 2x2 or 3x3 is a better choice. The Crazy 2x2 will be a good next step once the child has mastered the basics.
