A Gigaminx by ShengShou: a dodecahedron with 5x5-style layering, in a stickerless bright version without magnets. It is stable, resistant to popping and factory lubed. A great next challenge for those who have already solved the Megaminx.
The Megaminx is the dodecahedral counterpart of the 3x3 cube, and the Gigaminx is the counterpart of the 5x5 cube. It has the same dodecahedron shape, but each face is divided into five layers instead of three. The SengSo Gigaminx by ShengShou is a stickerless version in bright colors, without magnets. Some distributors sell it as the Gigaminx V2. It is a refreshed version of the older ShengShou Gigaminx with stickers and has a very similar mechanism.
The puzzle comes heavily lubed from the factory, so out of the box it turns smoothly but quite heavily. Some users mention that the springs are audible. Lubing the springs and screws helps. Corner cutting is limited and the turning feels rather blocky, so you need to align the layers fairly precisely. In return, the construction is solid and resistant to popping, so nothing falls apart while you solve.
The Gigaminx weighs approx. 330 g, so your hands may get tired during longer sessions. The faces are flat. Some people don't like this kind of grip, while others have no problem with it.
For those who can already solve the Megaminx and the 5x5 cube and are looking for a new challenge. It is solved similarly to a 5x5: centers first, then edges, and finally like a regular Megaminx. The puzzle works well for relaxed, casual solving and as part of a minx collection. It is not a model for breaking records. If you want to solve the Gigaminx for speed, you will be better off with newer magnetic designs. They offer more control and noticeably better cutting. As a gift for a child, this model only makes sense if the child can already solve the Megaminx.
