SengSo Legend Plus 18 cm 3x3

A big 3x3 cube from ShengShou (SengSo brand) with 18 cm sides, about three times bigger than a standard speedcube, which measures around 56 mm. SengSo Legend Plus 18 cm 3x3 isn't a hollow shell meant just for the shelf. Inside, it has a full mechanism with screws and springs for tension adjustment, the same as in regular cubes, so you can actually solve it. The stickerless bright version has no stickers: each face is made of plastic in its own colour, so nothing peels off or wears away.

What it's like to solve a big 3x3 cube

It turns smoothly, and the mechanism forgives small inaccuracies. When a layer is slightly misaligned, the cube does a bit of corner cutting instead of locking up straight away. Still, the size makes a difference. At 18 cm, regular fingertricks are practically out of the question and you turn the layers with your whole hand, often with both hands. Solving is slower and more "physical" than on a small cube. It's not a cube for breaking records, but it works well for relaxed solving. The cube has no magnets, so the layers don't snap into place on their own and you have to align them by hand.

Who is it for?

• As a decoration and gift. A big, colourful cube looks great on a desk, in a child's room or in a classroom, and whenever you feel like it, you can simply solve it.

For your first cube to learn on, it's better to choose a regular size of about 56 mm. A cube like that fits in your hand and lets you practise fingertricks right away. The Legend Plus works better as a second cube or an eye-catcher than as your main training cube. The cube is big and heavy, so the youngest children may find it hard to turn the layers.
