SengSo Metallic 3x3 Mirror by ShengShou is a Mirror Cube, a 3x3 cube whose pieces differ in size rather than colour. The whole cube has a gold, metallic (electroplated) coating, so the only clue while solving is the shape and thickness of each block. Once scrambled, the cube turns into an irregular shape. When solved, it returns to a perfect cube.

How to solve a Mirror Cube

The mechanism works just like a regular 3x3 cube, so the method you already know still applies. The challenge is recognising the pieces. Instead of looking for colours, you need to compare the height and proportions of the blocks, and at first this takes more attention than executing the algorithms. If you have already mastered the regular 3x3, it is a great and relatively inexpensive change of pace. Without knowing any 3x3 solving method, however, the Mirror can be frustrating.

According to distributor data, the cube has corner cutting of about 30 degrees, so turns usually go through even when the layers are not perfectly aligned. Tension is adjusted with screws in the centres, so you can set the cube looser or tighter. This is not a cube for breaking speed records. Its purpose is to change the way you think while solving, not to reach a high TPS.

Metallic finish

The gold coating makes the cube look great on a desk or shelf, which is why it is often bought as a gift. The uniform colour also matters for the puzzle itself: light reflections on the metallic surface don't reveal where a piece should go, so you have to rely on shape alone.

For cubers who already solve the 3x3 and want to try something different from yet another speed cube. It also makes a good gift for an older child or teenager who knows the basics of solving. As a first cube to learn on, a regular 3x3 model with coloured faces is a better choice.
