The SengSo Mr.M SQ-0 by ShengShou is a magnetic Square-0 puzzle. Its mechanism comes from the Square-1, but each corner is permanently joined to the adjacent edge. This means the top and bottom layers have fewer pieces and you don't need to pair them up, so the puzzle is noticeably simpler than a classic SQ-1. One user review even compares it to a slightly bandaged 2x2 cube. The puzzle comes in the stickerless bright version, i.e. coloured plastic without stickers.

It is still a Square-1 family puzzle, not a regular cube. You turn the top and bottom layers and then perform a slice, i.e. you turn half of the puzzle along the vertical cut. If you can solve a Square-1, you can also solve the SQ-0 without learning any new algorithms. If you don't know the Square-1 yet, the SQ-0 lets you get used to this way of turning and start with an easier version. Solving instructions are included.

What to expect out of the box?

Our unit turned stiffly and with noticeable resistance straight out of the box. The magnets are the most audible part, though. The manufacturer didn't glue them in but placed them loosely in special pockets in the pieces, so they shift and click as you turn. Customers of international shops point out the same thing, describing a distinctive clicking sound. If this bothers you, you can take the puzzle apart and glue the magnets in permanently. Lubing it and some solving should also improve how the mechanism turns.

Who is the Square-0 for?

The SQ-0 is mainly for collectors of shape-shifting puzzles and Square-1 solvers who want to try a simpler variant of this puzzle. It also works well as a first step before the classic SQ-1. It is not a puzzle for Square-1 speedcubing practice, as it works differently from the puzzle used in competitions.
