SengSo Mr.M SQ-2

SengSo Mr.M SQ-2 is a magnetic Square-2 from ShengShou. It is based on the classic Square-1, but here every corner is split into two separate, pointed pieces. The shape of the puzzle looks familiar, but there are more pieces inside, so the scramble is more complex and you need to learn a new way of solving it. Square-2 is the harder member of this family: Square-1 is the basic shape-shifting puzzle, and Square-0 is its simplified variant.

The Mr.M series are magnetic versions of ShengShou puzzles. In the SQ-2, the magnets are placed in the pieces of the top and bottom layers, while the slice has no magnets.

How does the Square-2 Mr.M turn?

According to user reviews, the layers turn smoothly right out of the box, although without lube the feel is rather dry. The magnets help the layers land in the next positions. Because there are magnets in every piece, you can clearly hear and feel a series of clicks while turning. Some people find this helpful, others find it distracting. Turning is much better than in the Square-0 modification, and catching is not a problem. A few people reported popping during the first solves, so it is better not to turn too aggressively at the beginning. It is also worth learning how to reassemble the puzzle.

Who is it for?

Square-2 makes the most sense for people who can already solve the Square-1. A popular approach is this: first you pair up the corner halves so they form regular corners, and then you finish the solve as on a Square-1. It is a good next step after the Square-1 and an interesting addition to a collection of shape-shifting puzzles. As a first puzzle of this type for someone who does not know the Square-1 yet, it may turn out to be too difficult.
