The first mass-produced 15x15 megaminx. It has 2942 visible pieces, a diameter of approx. 195 mm and weighs approx. 2.3 kg. A stickerless, non-magnetic version for collectors and experienced cubers looking for a long challenge.
Sengso Yottaminx 15x15 is a megaminx with 15 layers along each face edge. Sengso is a ShengShou brand. Until now, dodecahedra this large existed only as handmade custom puzzles. The first Yottaminx was built by Matt Bahner in 2014. The ShengShou version is the first mass-produced 15x15 megaminx. In the naming of the minx series, it is the next step after the Zettaminx (13x13).
The surface shows 2942 pieces: 20 corners, 390 edges and 2532 centers. The puzzle is about 195 mm in diameter, and a single edge measures 75 mm. It weighs roughly 2.3 kg, which is far more than a regular megaminx. With this weight and size, the Yottaminx is not meant for fast solving in your hands. It is most comfortable to turn on a table, calmly and carefully aligning the layers before each move.
The puzzle has no magnets, so the layers don't settle into place on their own, and aligning a face before a turn is up to you. The mechanism comes heavily lubed from the factory. Early users report that the Yottaminx turns well for its size. Don't expect the smoothness of a regular megaminx, though. With over a dozen layers and thousands of pieces, turning is heavier, and a poorly aligned layer can lock up. The stickerless version in the bright color scheme has no stickers that could wear off or peel during long solves.
The reduction method you know from big cubes and the Gigaminx or Teraminx is all you need. First you build the centers on each of the 12 faces, then pair the edges into complete strips, and finally solve the whole thing like a regular megaminx. There are few new algorithms here, but plenty of patience and repetitive work. A single solve usually takes many hours, often spread over several days.
This puzzle is for collectors and experienced cubers who have already solved smaller minxes and big NxN cubes and are now looking for a long project. It also looks great as a display piece on a shelf. If you haven't solved a 3x3 megaminx or a Gigaminx yet, start with those. The Yottaminx is not suitable as a first puzzle or as a gift for a child.
