SengSo YuFeng 3x3x3

SengSo YuFeng 3x3x3 is a magnetic speedcube from ShengShou, a brand that sells its cubes in China under the SengSo name. The manufacturer is best known for big cubes and affordable puzzles. In this 3x3 cube, it has fitted as many as three types of magnets, including core magnets. Features like these are usually found in much more expensive models. The cube is stickerless, in bright colors.

Three sets of magnets

• Corner-edge magnets: the classic magnets that position the layers.
• Magnets in the piece feet. They repel each other at roughly the halfway point of a turn, so a layer doesn't stop halfway and settles into place on its own.
• Corner-core magnets. They pull the corners towards the core and greatly help with auto-alignment, meaning the layers snap into place by themselves.

How it turns

The feel is quite unusual. The cube is light and airy, with low friction. The springs are fairly soft and the core magnets fairly strong, so a layer either clearly pulls into position or doesn't move at all. When turning aggressively, it's easy to overturn a layer slightly, but the magnets pull it right back. This gives a distinctive, "jumpy" feel that some cubers will love straight away and others will find distracting.

Corner cutting isn't very large, but thanks to the core magnets you rarely need to rely on it much. The cube is flexible, so if you want more stability, set a higher compression. Out of the box it can be a bit too tight, so it's worth loosening the screws slightly. It's louder than typical flagships and has a low, somewhat "hollow" sound.

Adjustment and build

The YuFeng has a dual adjustment system: tension is changed with the screws, and compression by hand, without a tool. This version uses classic springs; MagLev only arrived in the YuFeng V2. The pieces have a split-piece design, and the plastic is so glossy that it resembles a UV coating, although it isn't one. The shades are bright and vivid.

Who is it for?

For anyone who wants to try a cube with core magnets without spending a lot of money. The YuFeng will also suit cubers who already have a main cube and want to try a completely different feel. If you prefer a calm, predictable cube with a tactile feel, a more classic model is a better choice.
