ShengShou 13x13x13

ShengShou 13x13x13 is part of ShengShou's big cube series and one of the largest puzzles this manufacturer makes. The cube measures 130 mm, weighs approx. 1060 g and has slightly rounded faces (pillowed). The stickerless bright version has no stickers, so nothing peels off or wears away, even after many solves.

The mechanism is the same as in other large ShengShou cubes. It is a two-layer design: the pieces are held by two levels inside the cube, and the middle layer is wider than the others to make room for the core. The design is fairly simple. There are no magnets, no MagLev and no Ball-Core, so there are no extras that improve stability or corner cutting. You set the tension with adjustment screws.

Turning is light and smooth for a cube of this size. The mechanism has noticeable play, which keeps the layers from catching when you turn at a steady pace. According to users, the cube solves well straight out of the box and gets nicer after the first few solves. That same play comes at a price, though: if the layers are not aligned precisely, lockups happen, and very fast turning can make a piece pop out. Big cubes are solved with a focus on precision rather than TPS, and for that kind of solving the ShengShou 13x13 works well.

Who is it for? For cubers who can already solve big cubes (e.g. 7x7 or 9x9) and want to take on a solve that often takes more than an hour. It also makes a great collector's piece. The 13x13 is not an official competition event. Because of its size and weight, we would not recommend it as a child's first big cube. A smaller model is a better place to start.
