ShengShou 14x14x14

ShengShou 14x14x14 is one of the biggest cubes in the ShengShou lineup and a choice for anyone who wants to move on to truly large puzzles. It has a pillowed shape, which means slightly rounded faces. With this many layers, that makes it easier to hold in your hands and more comfortable to turn the outer layers. The model has been on the market since 2019 and has no magnets.

The 14x14 cube mechanism

Inside is the mechanism ShengShou uses in its big cubes. The pieces are held by several levels of tracks stacked one above another, because with 14 layers it is impossible to hold all the pieces from a single point. The middle layers are wider than the others to make room for the core inside. The manufacturer did not add any features to improve stability or corner cutting, so the whole design is fairly simple. You can set the tension with the adjustment screws.

How it solves

The layers turn lightly, and the mechanism has noticeable play. Thanks to that, a regular solve runs smoothly without major catches. With a cube this big, though, you need to turn precisely: layers that are not fully aligned quickly lead to lockups, and the middle layers may turn less evenly than the rest. A calm turning style helps, and over time so do good lubing and screw adjustment. Don't expect high TPS from a cube weighing about 780 g. This puzzle is made for long, relaxed sessions.

Who is it for?

For cubers who can already solve smaller NxN cubes (e.g. 6x6 or 7x7) using the reduction method and want to take on a large format. The cube also works well as a display piece in a collection. It is not suitable as a first cube. 14x14 is not a WCA event, so you cannot use this cube at official competitions.
