ShengShou 2x2x2 Magic Tower

ShengShou 2x2x2 Magic Tower is, in practice, a regular Pyraminx Duo sold under a different name. It has the tetrahedral shape of a classic Pyraminx, but only two layers instead of three, which makes it much easier to solve. In other shops, the same model (with the same EAN code) is listed as SengSo Pyraminx Duo or SengSo 2x2 Pyraminx. This version comes in the stickerless bright colour scheme, so it has no stickers and is made of coloured plastic.

How it turns

Solving it is really simple, and the construction isn't complicated either. The mechanism is basic and has no magnets. You may notice some slight catching from time to time, but it won't stop you from solving. The corners have grooves that make it easier to grip a piece while turning. This isn't a puzzle for setting fast times. It's better to think of it as a fun Pyraminx variant than as speedcubing gear.

Pyraminx Duo vs classic Pyraminx

The classic Pyraminx is a WCA event and has three layers. The Magic Tower has only two, so there are far fewer combinations, and a few simple algorithms are enough to solve it. This puzzle is not allowed in official competitions. If you want to practise Pyraminx for speed, choose a full-size 3-layer model.

Who is it for?

It works well as a first puzzle with an unusual shape. It's a good fit for a child who has already mastered the 2x2 or 3x3 cube, for anyone who wants to try something other than a cube, and for collectors of Pyraminx variants. An experienced cuber will solve it quickly, so for them it will be more of a collectible curiosity than a challenge.
