Gem series: cubes for getting started

Gem is ShengShou's budget series. These cubes don't compete with flagship speedcubing models, but they are perfectly good for learning to solve. The set makes the most sense if you want to try several cube sizes at once instead of buying each one separately. Moving from 2x2 to 3x3 is easy, and the 4x4 and 5x5 let you get used to parity and building centers on bigger cubes.

Mirror and Phoenix: something other than a cube

Mirror is a 3x3 variant in which all faces are the same color and the pieces differ in size. You solve it by shape, not by color, so even if you already know a 3x3 method, you'll have to change the way you think. Phoenix is the second puzzle in the set and adds one more shape to the mix.

Who is it for?

The set makes a great gift for a child or an adult who is just starting out with cubes and wants several different puzzles. It's also a good base for a home collection. If you already practice for time and keep an eye on your results, sooner or later you'll want to switch to faster, magnetic speedcubing cubes, but for learning to solve, this set is just right.
