Shengshou Gem 2x2x2

The Shengshou Gem 2x2x2 is an affordable stickerless 2x2 cube for anyone just starting out with the 2x2. It was released in 2018. The internals are made entirely of black plastic. The outer pieces have a textured surface that feels a bit like paper to the touch. The corners are made of several parts: each one has three separate caps, one for each colour. We offer it in the Stickerless Bright colour scheme, so there are no stickers that could wear off or peel.

How the Shengshou Gem 2x2 turns

Out of the box, the cube turns decently. The feel is smooth and the resistance is medium. The layers don't fly around on their own, which makes them easy to control when you're starting out. Corner cutting is limited, but it's enough for calm, fluid solving. Lockups are rare, although compared with more expensive 2x2 cubes, the Gem is less fluid and slower. With aggressive turning and attempts at high TPS, the limits of the mechanism start to get in the way.

Tension adjustment

The cube has adjustment screws, so you can set the tension to suit you: looser if you want lighter turning, or tighter if you want more stability.

Who is it for?

The Gem is a good first 2x2 for learning to solve and picking up the basic algorithms. It also works well as an inexpensive gift for a child. It makes sense for collectors, too, who want the full set of cubes from the Gem series. If you want to train for speed and bring your times down, you'll quickly notice the advantage of higher-end 2x2 cubes. In that case, it's better to go straight for a higher-end model.
