ShengShou Gigaminx

The Gigaminx is the 5x5 version of the megaminx. It is shaped like a dodecahedron, but each face has one more layer than a regular megaminx. Each of the 12 faces has 31 pieces, so 372 in total. ShengShou Gigaminx is the classic version of this puzzle with stickers, available on black or white plastic. It is non-magnetic and comes factory-lubed.

How it turns

The mechanism is very complex, yet the Gigaminx turns smoothly and without much resistance right out of the box. It weighs approx. 375 g, so it is noticeably heavier than a megaminx, and you will feel it in your hands during longer solves. Users praise its strong resistance to popping. On the other hand, corner cutting is fairly average. You need to finish each turn fully, because an incomplete turn easily leads to a lockup. This is a puzzle for calm, methodical solving, not a cube for high TPS.

The stickers come in the standard ShengShou colour scheme. Over time, the factory lube can weaken the adhesive and some stickers may start to peel off. That is why a spare set is included.

Tension adjustment

Tension is set with adjustment screws. You can loosen the mechanism a little so it turns more easily, or tighten it for more stability.

Black or white?

The mechanism and stickers are the same in both versions. Some people prefer black plastic because the coloured pieces stand out better against it. With 372 pieces, recognising colours takes up a large part of the solve.

Classic vs. stickerless

ShengShou later released the Gigaminx V2 and V3 in stickerless versions. The V2 is practically the same mechanism in a slightly smaller size. The V3 was redesigned from scratch: it has faces with 35 mm edges and is much lighter. The model described here is the first, stickered version, larger and heavier than its successors.

Who is it for?

For people who can already solve a megaminx and a 5x5 cube and are looking for a bigger challenge. The Gigaminx also makes a great addition to a puzzle collection. It is not suitable as a first puzzle, including for children. The Gigaminx is not a WCA event, so it is not used at official competitions.
