ShengShou Legend 3x3x3

ShengShou Legend 3x3x3

A light, non-magnetic 3x3 cube at a low price, and a newer ShengShou model that followed the Aurora. The ShengShou Legend 3x3x3 works well as your first speedcube. It is ready to solve straight out of the box, turns lightly, and has decent corner cutting for its price range.

How the ShengShou Legend 3x3 feels

Turning is smooth and light, and the layers move with little resistance. Even if you are only just learning the layer-by-layer method, you will quickly start executing algorithms more fluidly. The cube is fairly quiet, with a muted sound. The corners are hard to push out, so popping is rare, even at looser tension settings.

The Legend has no magnets, so it does not snap the layers into place by itself. Stability depends more on the accuracy of your turns than with magnetic cubes. For learning and casual solving, that is perfectly fine. If your TPS starts rising quickly, sooner or later you will notice that a magnetic cube gives you more control.

Construction and adjustment

• White core that the whole mechanism is built around.
• Screws and springs let you change the tension. Loosen them for a faster cube, tighten them for a more stable and controllable one.
• Edges with long, curved grooves that reduce friction between the pieces. Each edge comes apart into two parts (a larger and a smaller one), which makes cleaning and lubing the inside easier.
• Corners with a short "foot" that holds the piece in place and keeps it from falling out.

Which version should you choose?

The Black and White versions have stickers in clear, bright colors, more vivid than on older ShengShou cubes. The faces are easy to recognize even in poor lighting. Stickerless Bright is made of colored plastic with no stickers, so nothing wears off or peels over time. The standard size is approx. 56-57 mm. The 70 mm version has the same mechanism in a larger body and is noticeably heavier. It will appeal to people with large hands or to collectors, but for speedsolving the standard size is the better choice.

Who is it for?

For beginners, kids and anyone who wants an inexpensive way to find out whether speedcubing is for them. It also makes a great spare cube to keep in your backpack. The Legend is allowed in official competitions. For ambitious speedcubers, however, we recommend a magnetic cube as the next step.
