A budget, non-magnetic 3x3 cube from ShengShou. It has a simple construction with one-piece edges, deep rounding for easier corner cutting and tension adjustment with screws. A good first cube, and legal for official competitions.
ShengShou Legend S 3x3x3 is a budget, non-magnetic 3x3 cube released by ShengShou in 2020. It was designed as an affordable first speed cube. It is legal for official competitions, so it also works well for your first tournaments.
What sets it apart most is the design of its pieces. The edges are one-piece, which you almost never see in cubes with newer designs. The corners are two-piece: the inner and outer parts are each a single piece of plastic. Otherwise, the mechanism is typical of budget cubes. The pieces have suitably deep rounding that improves corner cutting, so a layer doesn't stop right away when a turn isn't perfectly aligned.
The simple construction has one drawback: the cube is hard to magnetize yourself. If you plan to add magnets in the future, go straight for a magnetic cube or a model designed for this kind of modification.
Tension is set with adjustment screws. You can loosen the cube so it turns more lightly, or tighten it if you want it to feel more solid and be less prone to popping.
The Legend S is a good cube for beginners and a sensible choice as a child's first cube. It also works as a spare cube for school or your backpack. It has no magnets, so the layers don't snap into place on their own and all the control comes from your turning. That's no problem when you're starting out, but for faster solving a magnetic cube is usually more stable and more forgiving. If you already time your solves and are aiming for better results, you'll appreciate switching to a magnetic model.
