ShengShou Master Kilominx

ShengShou Master Kilominx is a dodecahedral megaminx-type puzzle that corresponds to a 4x4 cube. The Kilominx is the 2x2 equivalent, and the Master version is its bigger brother: it has more layers and more pieces, and it takes more work to solve. This first version of the model has stickers and is available in two body colors: black and white.

How it solves

The Master Kilominx is not much harder than a regular megaminx. If you can solve a megaminx and a 4x4 cube, you will pick up the method quickly: first you build the centers and edge pairs, then you solve the whole puzzle much like a megaminx. You will also need to learn a few extra algorithms.

Turning is fluid and smooth, and lockups are rare. Corner cutting reaches about 15°, which is a good result for a puzzle of this type. However, this is not a puzzle for high TPS like flagship 3x3 cubes. It is more of a relaxed brain teaser where thinking matters more than speed.

Construction and adjustment

The mechanism is complex and difficult to take apart, so it is best not to disassemble the puzzle unless you need to. Tension adjustment is done with screws. The non-magnetic version, at about 93 mm and about 354 g, is noticeably bigger and heavier than a typical megaminx.

Other versions of the Master Kilominx

ShengShou later released further versions of this model. The V2 is stickerless and lighter, while the V3 has a smaller body and is also available in a magnetic version. The model described here is the 2018 original, with stickers and without magnets.

Who is it for?

For collectors and for anyone who already knows the megaminx and the 4x4 and wants a puzzle that takes more time. The Master Kilominx is not a WCA event, so people buy it mainly for the joy of solving. For your first dodecahedral puzzle, a regular megaminx is a better choice.
