ShengShou 4-layer Pyraminx (Master Pyraminx)

If you have already solved a regular pyraminx and are looking for something more challenging in the same shape, try the ShengShou 4-layer Pyraminx, also known as the Master Pyraminx. It is a bigger version of the classic puzzle: instead of three layers, it has 4 layers on each axis. A regular pyraminx is the equivalent of a 3x3 cube, while the Master Pyraminx roughly corresponds to a 4x4 cube. Solving it therefore requires extra steps and different algorithms than the standard model.

How it turns

The puzzle comes factory lubed and turns lightly and smoothly right out of the box. Users describe the feel as smooth with a slightly crunchy character. The speed is moderate, so the puzzle doesn't get out of control. The outer layers turn more loosely, while the inner layers offer a bit more resistance. This model has no magnets and no system that would align the layers for you. That means you need to align the layers carefully yourself before each move, otherwise lockups will occur. With tighter tension the puzzle is more stable and forgives small inaccuracies thanks to a little corner cutting.

Adjustment

The mechanism uses screws and springs, so you can adjust the tension to suit you. A looser setup gives lighter turning. A tighter one reduces layer wobble and helps with faster solving.

Classic version vs. V2

This product is the first version of the ShengShou Master Pyraminx: it comes in black or white plastic with the bright sticker shades typical of ShengShou. Later, the manufacturer released the V2 version, which is noticeably lighter and comes stickerless. It is a separate model, so its specifications do not apply to this puzzle.

Who is it for?

For those who already know the regular pyraminx and want to move on to a bigger version, as well as for collectors of non-WCA puzzles. The Master Pyraminx is not an event at official competitions, so you buy it for fun and for the challenge rather than for competition practice. For a child's first puzzle, the classic pyraminx is a better choice.
