ShengShou Mastermorphix 2x2x2 is essentially a 2x2 cube shaped like a rounded regular tetrahedron. This kind of shape mod is also often called a Pyramorphix. The mechanism is the same as in a classic 2x2 cube. Only the shape is different: the faces are convex (pillowed), so when solved, the puzzle looks like a rounded pyramid. This is the stickerless version, so the face colors come from colored plastic, not stickers.

How it turns

The puzzle has no magnets, and you turn it just like a regular 2x2. According to user reviews, it is smooth right out of the box, has pleasant tension and feels solidly built. The shape limits corner cutting, so this model is not designed for speedsolving. What matters more is that it turns evenly and without resistance. Some people find the rounded faces awkward at first, because you hold them differently from a flat cube.

How it differs from a regular 2x2

When scrambled, the Mastermorphix changes shape. The corners, which form the tips of the tetrahedron when solved, move to where the face centers are, so the puzzle loses its regular shape. There are only four faces, so some pieces have a single color and their orientation does not matter. If you can solve a 2x2, you can solve this puzzle too. You just need to get used to the colors and shape giving you different hints than usual. You cannot turn this puzzle into a regular 2x2 cube, and the product is not allowed in official WCA competitions.

Who is it for?

For people who already know the basics of the 2x2 and want to start with shape-shifting puzzles without spending much. It also works well as an affordable addition to your collection, next to larger Mastermorphixes and the Pyraminx. We do not recommend prying the corners or twisting them, as this can easily damage a piece in 2x2 puzzles.
