Mechanically, the ShengShou Mr.M 2x2x2 Pyraminx is a regular 2x2 cube. What sets it apart is its shape: a regular tetrahedron.

In the speedcubing community, this puzzle is called a Pyramorphix. It is a shape mod of a 2x2 cube, not the classic Pyraminx used in WCA competitions. A Pyraminx has three layers and separately turning tips. This puzzle has two layers and the same moves as a 2x2. The Pyramorphix is not a WCA event, so it is not allowed in official competitions.

How to solve it

After a few moves, the tetrahedron no longer looks like a pyramid, and pieces stick out at different angles. The methods you know from the 2x2 work here as usual. Tracking pieces and restoring the shape is harder, because the colors are arranged differently than on a cube. That is why even someone who solves a 2x2 without thinking can easily get thrown off.

Turning is very good, and the puzzle turns lightly and smoothly. Corner cutting matters less here than in speed cubes, because with this shape hardly anyone makes fast, imprecise moves. Even so, the puzzle handles faster solving well.

Magnets and plastic

The Mr.M comes with factory magnets. This is especially useful in shape mods, because it is hard to judge by eye whether a layer is perfectly aligned. The magnets snap it into place for you, so lockups happen less often. The magnet strength is well balanced: you can clearly feel the layer snapping into place, but the puzzle does not put up much resistance. The plastic has a distinctive, rough texture typical of the Mr.M series. It keeps the puzzle from slipping in your hands. However, if you are used to smooth cubes, it may feel scratchy at first.

Who is it for?

For those who can solve a 2x2 and want to try something different without learning a new method. It also works well as an addition to a shape mod collection and as a gift for a child who has already mastered regular cubes. If you need a Pyraminx for competitions, choose the classic three-layer model.
