ShengShou Mr.M Pyraminx

ShengShou Mr. M Pyraminx is ShengShou's first magnetic pyraminx, released at the end of 2018. Its design is simple and complies with official competition regulations. It's a good choice if you want a magnetic pyraminx at an affordable price and don't mind that it performs best only after a quick setup.

The mechanism is based on the ShengShou Gem Pyraminx. The differences are the magnets, which help the layers align, and the lack of the ball-bearing stabilization found in the Gem. The plastic is textured, the same as in the Gem and other puzzles from the Mr. M series. It gives a good grip and doesn't get shiny. The colors are stickerless bright, so there are no stickers that could wear off or peel.

Turning is relatively light, and the magnets clearly stop the layers in the right place. This makes it easier to avoid overshooting during fast moves. However, corner cutting is noticeably weaker than in competing pyraminxes. With imprecise turns, the layer will stop sooner, so you need to turn a bit more accurately.

Many users rate the Mr. M as competition-level hardware, but only after a few minor tweaks. Most often you need to do three things:

1. glue the magnets in the centers, as they are sometimes poorly glued at the factory (the tips come off by simply pulling them off),
2. check the color scheme and, if necessary, swap the caps on the tips and centers,
3. set the tension using the adjustment screws, which you can reach after removing the cap from a tip.

The Mr. M also works well as a first pyraminx, because it's magnetic and easy to get used to. However, beginners should know that the advantages of this pyraminx show best after setup. If you don't want to tweak anything, consider a model that performs well straight out of the box.
