ShengShou Pyraminx

ShengShou Pyraminx

This is the classic ShengShou Pyraminx with a black or white body and stickers. Its mechanism is very similar to the first pyraminxes that appeared on the market. The ball-bearing stabilizers sit in the middle of the edges, just like in Meffert's Pyraminx, for example. Today this model is bought for a collection rather than for speedsolving.

How it turns

The balls rub against the plastic, so turning is heavy and quite uneven. Corner cutting is practically non-existent, so you need to align the layers precisely before you start the next move. The puzzle clicks noticeably, and some units are fairly loud. Users report that after breaking it in, lubing it and loosening the screws, it turns noticeably better. Even so, it can't match modern magnetic pyraminxes for speedcubing.

Tension is adjusted with the adjustment screws. Tensioning will help loosen the turning a little, but it won't change the character of a ball-based mechanism.

Who is this pyraminx for?

Mainly for collectors and people who like older designs and want to see what pyraminxes were like before magnetic models came along. This is a PURELY COLLECTIBLE product. The model is legal for official competitions. If you want to practise for time or you're buying your first pyraminx to learn on, it's better to choose a newer, smoother-turning model.
