ShengShou Pyramorphix is a 2x2 cube in the shape of a regular tetrahedron. When solved, it looks like a pyramid, but inside it has a standard 2x2 mechanism and behaves like a shape mod, a shape-shifting puzzle. After a few moves, the pyramid turns into an irregular shape that returns to its original form only once it is solved. It is a good puzzle for anyone who already knows the 3x3 or 2x2 and wants to try something with a different shape.

How it differs from a regular 2x2

The moves are the same as on a 2x2, so you can apply the solving methods for that cube here. The difficulty comes from the shape. After scrambling, the pieces look completely different than on a cube, it is easy to lose track of the puzzle's orientation, and at some stages you also have to watch the orientation of the pieces, not just their position. Even someone who solves the 2x2 well usually needs a while to get used to it.

How it turns

Turning is smooth and predictable. Even after the shape changes, the layers do not resist. Corner cutting is practically non-existent, but for this type of puzzle it does not matter much, as the Pyramorphix is not meant for breaking TPS records. Some users notice that the puzzle can catch slightly on imprecise turns, so it is better to turn it calmly and evenly. You can change the tension with the adjustment screws.

This model has no magnets. If you want the layers to snap into place on their own, consider the magnetic ShengShou Mr. M Pyramorphix. The Pillowed version, on the other hand, has convex faces and is slightly more compact.

Who is it for?

The Pyramorphix is a great fit for puzzle collectors and for people who can solve the 2x2 and are looking for something different. It also makes a good gift for a child who can already handle the classic cube. For a very first puzzle, it is better to choose a regular 2x2 or 3x3 cube. The Pyramorphix is not a WCA event, so it is a puzzle for fun, not for competition training.
