ShengShou Square-1: a classic shape-shifting puzzle

ShengShou Square-1 came out when there were still very few Square-1 models to choose from. Today it is one of the oldest Square-1 puzzles we offer. It has no magnets. Tension is set with adjustment screws. We see it more as a collector's item or an inexpensive way to get to know the Square-1. We don't recommend it as competition hardware.

How Square-1 differs from a 3x3 cube

The top and bottom layers are made of pieces of different widths. The middle layer turns 180 degrees, a move called a slice. After just a few moves, the puzzle is no longer a cube. That's why every solve starts with restoring the shape (cubeshape), and only then do you solve the colors. Square-1 is an official WCA event, and this model is allowed in competitions.

How it turns

User opinions are mixed. The puzzle comes factory-lubed, and for some people it turns smoothly right away. Others say it feels slow and heavy out of the box and only improves after cleaning and re-lubing. Two comments come up most often: weak corner cutting and a tendency to pop. If you turn the U or D layer before the slice is perfectly aligned, an edge can fall out. Tightening the screws reduces this problem, but the turning becomes heavier. The stickers wear off over time, and according to some reviews the caps on the top and bottom layers also come off.

Who is it for?

For collectors and for anyone who wants to see how the Square-1 works. It's enough for learning the basics: cubeshape, parity and your first algorithms. If you plan to solve regularly for time or compete, it's better to choose a newer, magnetic Square-1. Magnets make it easier to hit the slice and reduce the risk of popping.
